Lyrical Painting
To me, The Music of the Night is about allowing yourself to live in the world of imagination - the world that we enter at night in our dreams and when we close our eyes. In some sense, it's about realizing the light within the darkness which is why I wanted my painting to have a theme of fire. I wanted my painting to have candles and a fiery background. I’m trying to express an intense, yet inviting feeling in my painting which is why I choose harsh colors for the background and why I made the candles softer and less frightening with elegantly written lyrics I started my painting with alternating quick scratchy lines of pink and orangish yellow. Then I took those same colors and made a wash on top of the paint I already had. Then I painted on the candles and did a wash over the whole painting. I next used pastels to shade the candles and write in the lyrics. The biggest challenge that came up was when I was nearly finished with my piece and some paint from another painting dripped onto mine. I tried covering up the clashing paint and found that it only made it worse. Then I tried rubbing the paint of and covering up the blank area. From start to finish, the elements of my painting became more united. Every section of my painting started out as its own dramatically individual entity, then I merged them together lightly so that they could work together.
